Cannavaro Busted

Fabio Cannavaro StingsYou may all have heard, but Ill reiterate, Fabio Cannavaro Azzurri captain and ex-Real Madrid and current and former defender for Juventus has been suspended for testing positive for a banned substance (cortisone). The websites start buzzing with activity and the anti-Italian segment reply with the now we all know how they won the last World Cup but is it really?

Some reports state that the guy was stung by a bee or a wasp (which explains the buzzing I admit) and to stave off an allergic reaction the 38 year old defender was given a shot of cortisone to avoid a possible allergic reaction. Paperwork was missing or some-such and he was sent in to perform a drug-test which he obviously failed.

It seems innocuous but the sting is still there: no pun intended. Cannavaro is still answering to allegations that he and his Juventus teamates in the early to mid 1990s were given performance enhancing substances. Riccardo Agricola, the former Juventus doctor was convicted of administering them although his sentence was suspended but Cannavaro, along with the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Roberto Baggio, Alessandro Del Piero and Gianluca Vialli have continued to deal with this stain on their legacies.

All this says to me is that the sport needs to come down and come down hard on players who seek to gain an advantage. Ive seen first hand what steroids have done to major sports in the United States; ruining the integrity of the game of baseball, creating impossible physical expectations of American Football players, and influencing the competitiveness of practically every other sport on the American (if not the worlds) sporting landscape.
